JEE Main Physics: chapter-wise important topics — Paper Predict Notes

JEE Main Physics has 25 questions: 20 MCQs and 5 numerical-value questions. The paper covers both Class 11 and 12, but some chapters are asked most years and reward revision far more than others.

This guide goes through the JEE Main Physics important chapters unit by unit, what to focus on in each, and how to practise. Always check the latest NTA information bulletin for the current syllabus.

Outline of JEE Main Physics: chapter-wise important topics
What this guide covers

Mechanics

Mechanics is consistently heavy and also underpins later chapters. Focus on kinematics with graphs, Newton's laws with friction and constraints, work-energy, circular motion, rotational dynamics (moment of inertia, rolling) and gravitation. Rotation causes the most mistakes, so give it extra problem time.

Electrodynamics

Electrostatics, current electricity, magnetic effects of current and electromagnetic induction together form a large block. Practise capacitor networks, Kirchhoff's laws, Biot-Savart and Ampere applications, and EMI with circuits. Many numerical-value questions come from here.

Optics

Ray optics (mirrors, lenses, prisms, combinations) and wave optics (Young's double slit, diffraction basics, polarisation) are asked most years. Ray-diagram sign conventions are where marks are lost.

Modern Physics

Photoelectric effect, Bohr model, de Broglie wavelength, nuclei and radioactivity. These chapters are short, formula-driven and among the best return on time in the whole paper.

Thermodynamics

Laws of thermodynamics, processes on PV diagrams, efficiency, and kinetic theory of gases. Questions are often direct if you know which quantity is constant in each process.

Waves and SHM

SHM equations, spring and pendulum systems, energy in SHM, standing waves in strings and pipes, and Doppler effect. Link SHM with waves so you revise both together.

Problem practice

  • Concept first: read the chapter summary and derive key formulas once.
  • Graded sets: 15–20 problems per chapter from easy to JEE level.
  • PYQs: solve recent JEE Main questions chapter-wise and tag the ones you got wrong.
  • Error log: note why you went wrong (concept, calculation, reading) and redo those after a week.

Frequently asked questions

Which Physics chapters should I start with for JEE Main?

Mechanics first, because many later chapters use it. Then electrodynamics and modern physics.

Are numerical-value questions harder?

They have no options to check against, so careless errors cost more. Practise writing the final answer with correct units and rounding.

How many problems should I solve daily?

Enough to cover one concept fully. Consistency matters more than a large number on one day.

The short version

Mechanics and electrodynamics are consistently heavy, modern physics gives quick marks, and optics, thermodynamics and SHM are asked most years. Revise concepts, solve graded problems and PYQs, and keep an error log.
