JEE Main Maths: chapters that carry the most marks
Maths is often the longest section in JEE Main. These are the chapters that matter most and how to get faster at them.

Many students find JEE Main Maths the most time-consuming section. It has 25 questions, 20 MCQs and 5 numerical-value questions, and the calculations can be long. Knowing which chapters carry the most marks helps you spend practice time well.
This guide covers the JEE Main Maths important chapters and how to build speed. Check the latest NTA information bulletin for the current syllabus.

Calculus
Calculus is consistently heavy. Limits, continuity and differentiability, application of derivatives (maxima-minima, monotonicity), definite integrals and their properties, area under curves and differential equations are asked most years. Definite integral properties save a lot of time once you know them well.
Algebra
Complex numbers, quadratic equations, sequences and series, binomial theorem, permutations and combinations, and matrices and determinants. Matrices and determinants questions are often quick if you know the properties.
Coordinate geometry
Straight lines, circles and conic sections (parabola, ellipse, hyperbola). Learn standard results for tangents, normals and chords so you do not derive them in the exam.
Vectors and 3D
Dot and cross products, scalar triple product, lines and planes in 3D, shortest distance and angles. These questions are usually formula-based and scoring.
Revise this faster: Maths Detailed Notes — handwritten, colour-coded notes with points often asked, PYQs and tricks in every chapter.
Probability and statistics
Conditional probability, Bayes' theorem, binomial distribution, mean and variance. These are short chapters with predictable question types.
Speed practice
- Formula sheet: one page per chapter, revised daily for ten minutes.
- Timed sets: 10 questions in 20 minutes from one chapter, then mixed sets.
- Shortcuts with care: use standard results and properties, but check they apply.
- Skip and return: in mocks, leave long questions for the second pass.
- PYQs: solve recent sessions chapter-wise to learn the common question types.
Frequently asked questions
Which Maths chapter should I revise first for JEE Main?
Calculus, because it is consistently heavy and links to coordinate geometry and differential equations.
How do I stop running out of time in Maths?
Do timed chapter sets, keep formula sheets fresh, and use a two-pass approach in mocks.
Are vectors and 3D worth it?
Yes. They are formula-based and among the more scoring chapters.
The short version
Calculus and algebra are consistently heavy, coordinate geometry needs standard results ready, and vectors, 3D and probability are scoring. Build speed with formula sheets, timed sets and PYQs.
