CBSE Class 12 Chemistry: important topics and reactions — Paper Predict Notes

CBSE Class 12 Chemistry has a 70-mark theory paper and 30 marks of practicals. The theory paper mixes numericals, reasoning questions and reactions, so each part of the syllabus needs a different kind of revision.

This guide covers the Class 12 Chemistry important topics by section, the reactions you must know, and how to write answers that match the marking scheme. Check the latest CBSE syllabus for your year.

Outline of CBSE Class 12 Chemistry: important topics and reactions
What this guide covers

Physical chapters

Solutions, Electrochemistry and Chemical Kinetics carry most of the numericals. Know colligative properties and van't Hoff factor, the Nernst equation, conductivity and Kohlrausch's law, and rate laws with half-life for first-order reactions. Write the formula, substitute with units, and box the answer.

Inorganic chapters

The d- and f-block elements and Coordination Compounds are asked most years. For d-block, learn trends with reasons (variable oxidation states, colour, magnetic behaviour). For coordination compounds, practise IUPAC naming, isomerism and valence bond theory and crystal field splitting basics.

Organic chapters

Haloalkanes and Haloarenes; Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers; Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids; Amines; and Biomolecules. Organic carries a large share of the paper. Focus on mechanisms named in NCERT (SN1, SN2), reasons for reactivity order, and distinguishing tests.

Named reactions

Keep a table of every named reaction in NCERT with the reactant, reagent and product. Commonly asked ones include Wurtz, Finkelstein, Swarts, Sandmeyer, Reimer-Tiemann, Kolbe, Williamson synthesis, Aldol, Cannizzaro, Clemmensen, Wolff-Kishner, Etard, Rosenmund, Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky, Hofmann bromamide and the carbylamine reaction. Write each one from memory at least twice before the exam.

Conversions

Two- or three-step conversions appear in most papers. Practise common ones such as ethanol to ethanoic acid, benzene to phenol, aniline to chlorobenzene and propanone to propene. Show each reagent above the arrow.

Answer writing

  • Reasoning questions: state the cause in one line, then the effect.
  • Numericals: formula, substitution with units, final answer.
  • Reactions: balanced equation with conditions.
  • Distinguish tests: reagent, observation for each compound.

Frequently asked questions

Which chapters should I revise first?

Organic, because it has the largest share and needs repeated practice. Then the three physical chapters for numericals.

How do I remember named reactions?

Keep one table, write it from memory every few days, and solve conversion questions that use them.

Is NCERT enough for Class 12 Chemistry boards?

Yes for the theory paper. Read NCERT text, intext questions and exercises, then solve sample papers and PYQs.

The short version

Practise numericals in physical chapters, learn trends with reasons in inorganic, and give organic the most time. Keep a named-reaction table, practise conversions and write answers in the marking-scheme format.
