CBSE Class 12 Biology has a 70-mark theory paper and 30 marks of practicals. The paper is closely tied to NCERT language, and diagrams earn marks in long answers. Good revision means knowing NCERT well and practising labelled drawings.
This guide covers the Class 12 Biology important topics unit by unit, the diagrams to master and how to write answers. Check the latest CBSE syllabus for your year.

Reproduction
Sexual reproduction in flowering plants, human reproduction and reproductive health. Focus on microsporogenesis and megasporogenesis, double fertilisation, gametogenesis, the menstrual cycle and contraceptive methods.
Genetics and evolution
Principles of inheritance and variation, molecular basis of inheritance and evolution. This unit is consistently heavy. Practise monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, pedigree analysis, DNA replication, transcription, the lac operon, and Hardy-Weinberg principle.
Biology and human welfare
Human health and disease, and microbes in human welfare. Learn diseases with causative organisms and symptoms, the immune response, and uses of microbes in industry, sewage treatment and biogas.
Biotechnology
Principles and processes, and applications. Know restriction enzymes, cloning vectors (pBR322), PCR, gel electrophoresis, Bt crops, RNA interference and gene therapy. Steps of rDNA technology are asked most years.
Ecology
Organisms and populations, ecosystems, and biodiversity and conservation. Population interactions, growth curves, energy flow, ecological pyramids and conservation methods are common topics. Examples matter here, so keep a list.

Diagrams
Practise these until you can draw them in three minutes with labels:
- L.S. of a flower and anatropous ovule
- Human male and female reproductive systems
- Sectional view of seminiferous tubule and ovary
- DNA replication fork and the lac operon
- pBR322 and steps of PCR
- Growth curves and ecological pyramids
Answer writing
Use NCERT terms, underline keywords, and add a labelled diagram wherever it supports the answer. For long answers, write in points with a short introduction.
Frequently asked questions
Which unit carries the most marks?
Genetics and evolution is consistently heavy, followed by reproduction and ecology.
Do I need to draw diagrams in every answer?
Only where they help. In questions about structures or processes, a labelled diagram often earns marks.
Is NCERT enough for Class 12 Biology?
Yes. Read every line, including tables and captions, then practise PYQs and sample papers.
The short version
Read NCERT closely, give genetics the most time, practise key diagrams with labels, and write answers in points using NCERT terms.
