How to choose notes for Class 10 boards
Class 10 is the first board exam, and the right notes make it much less stressful. Here is what to look for in Maths, Science and Social Science notes for CBSE and ICSE.

Class 10 is the first board exam most students face, and it often comes with a lot of pressure from school, tuition and family. It is also the year when many students first realise they cannot revise everything from textbooks alone. There are simply too many chapters across too many subjects.
Good notes make Class 10 manageable. They let you revise a chapter in a fraction of the time, and they help you write answers the way examiners want. This guide covers what Class 10 notes should include for each subject, how CBSE and ICSE differ, and how to use notes well. It is written for students, but parents choosing material will find it useful too.

How Class 10 boards are marked
For CBSE, most subjects have 80 marks for the theory paper and 20 for internal assessment. ICSE also uses 80 marks for most papers with 20 for internal assessment. Always check the latest board syllabus and sample paper for your year.
Examiners look for a few things in every subject.
- Correct keywords. Definitions and explanations in textbook language.
- Steps. In Maths and Science numericals, every step can earn marks.
- Diagrams and maps. Labelled diagrams in Science and accurate map work in Social Science.
- Presentation. Neat answers with points and underlined key terms are easier to mark.
CBSE has also increased competency-based questions, such as case-based and source-based items, which test whether you can apply concepts.
What good Class 10 notes must include
Full syllabus coverage
Every chapter in the current syllabus, in the textbook order, with removed chapters left out.
Textbook language
Definitions and key statements should stay close to NCERT for CBSE or the prescribed textbooks for ICSE.
Previous year questions
PYQs next to each topic show what gets asked and how. Class 10 boards repeat many questions and concepts.
A recap per chapter
A short summary for quick revision before each paper.
Memory aids
Tricks and mnemonics for dates, lists and sequences, especially in Social Science and Chemistry.
The best Class 10 notes are short enough to revise quickly but complete enough that you never need to go back to five different books.
Maths notes
Maths is a subject where notes are mostly about methods and practice.
- Formulas for each chapter, with what each symbol means.
- Worked examples showing every step, since steps earn marks.
- Standard question types for each chapter, such as word problems in quadratic equations or height and distance problems in trigonometry.
- Theorems in geometry with their statements and, where required, proofs.
- Common mistakes, such as sign errors and skipped steps.
Maths notes do not replace practice. Use them to revise methods, then solve textbook exercises and sample papers.
Science notes
Class 10 Science covers Physics, Chemistry and Biology in one paper, so notes need to handle all three.
Chemistry
- Types of reactions with balanced examples.
- Acids, bases and salts, with indicators and pH.
- The reactivity series and properties of metals and non-metals.
- Carbon compounds, functional groups and nomenclature.
Biology
- Life processes with diagrams of the digestive system, heart, nephron and respiratory system.
- Control and coordination, including the reflex arc and plant hormones.
- Reproduction and heredity, with Mendel's experiments.
- Our environment, food chains and ecosystems.
Physics
- Light: ray diagrams for mirrors and lenses, the mirror and lens formulas.
- The human eye and its defects.
- Electricity: Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, power and heating effect.
- Magnetic effects of current, with field-line diagrams and rules.
Science notes must have clear, labelled diagrams. Diagrams are some of the most reliable marks in the paper.
Social Science notes
Social Science is the subject where good notes help most, because there is so much to remember.
History
- Timelines for each chapter.
- Key events, people and causes, written as short points.
- Tricks for dates, such as stories or sequences that link one event to the next.
Geography
- Resources, agriculture, minerals, energy and industries, as tables where possible.
- Map work with every location in the current map list.
Political Science (Civics)
- Key concepts such as federalism, power sharing and political parties, as structured points.
Economics
- Definitions and examples for development, sectors of the economy, money and credit, and globalisation.

CBSE and ICSE: what changes
The principles are the same, but the details differ.
- ICSE has more subjects and more depth in some areas, such as separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology papers, and History and Civics as one paper.
- ICSE answers often need more detail, and textbooks vary between schools, so notes should follow the ICSE syllabus rather than NCERT.
- CBSE follows NCERT closely, so notes should keep NCERT language.
Make sure the notes you choose are written for your board.
Red flags to watch for
- Notes for the wrong board. CBSE notes will not cover ICSE properly, and the reverse.
- Outdated syllabus. Removed chapters taking up space, or new ones missing.
- Too much text. Notes that are as long as the textbook are not much faster to revise.
- Unclear diagrams. If you cannot read the labels, you cannot learn them.
- No sample. Always check real pages first.
How to check a set before buying
- Open one chapter in each subject that you have already studied in school.
- Compare with the textbook. Are the key definitions, diagrams and examples there?
- Check the maps in Social Science against your board's current map list.
- Look at the PYQs and check that they are recent.
- Revise one chapter for 20 minutes, then test yourself. Did the notes help you remember more?
How to use notes through the year
During the school year
After each chapter is taught in school, read the same chapter in your notes and solve the PYQs. This keeps you up to date and makes pre-boards less stressful.
Before pre-boards
Revise every chapter from notes. Practise diagrams, maps and Maths problems. Attempt one sample paper per subject.
In the final month
Use chapter recaps and your list of mistakes. Solve the official sample paper and several previous year papers under time. Practise writing answers, not just reading.
Between papers
Revise only from recaps, formulas, diagrams and maps.
A note for parents
If you are choosing notes for your child, look for three things: that they match the right board and syllabus year, that a free sample is available, and that your child finds the sample easy to read. The best notes are the ones your child will actually open every day.
Frequently asked questions
Are notes enough for Class 10 boards?
Notes help you revise. You still need textbook exercises, sample papers and previous year questions for practice.
Should I buy notes for all subjects or just one?
If you need help in two or more subjects, a complete pack is usually better value. If one subject is weak, start with that.
Do handwritten notes help in Class 10?
Yes. They are condensed and easy to scan, which makes revision faster, especially for Science diagrams and Social Science.
When should I start revising from notes?
Start during the school year, after each chapter. At the latest, begin three months before boards.
The short version
Good Class 10 notes cover the full current syllabus for your board, keep textbook language, include worked steps for Maths, labelled diagrams for Science, and timelines, tables and maps for Social Science, with PYQs next to each topic. Check a sample before buying, revise from notes after each chapter, and practise with sample papers in the final months.
