How to choose notes for CBSE Class 12 boards
Board exams reward clear answers in NCERT language. Here is how to choose Class 12 notes for Science, Commerce and Arts that match how answers are actually marked.

Class 12 boards are different from entrance exams in one important way: they are marked by examiners reading your written answers. You can understand a concept perfectly and still lose marks if your answer misses the keywords, skips a step or leaves out a diagram.
That makes the choice of notes for boards slightly different from choosing notes for NEET, JEE or CUET. Board notes need to help you understand, remember and write. This guide explains what to look for, stream by stream, and how to use notes alongside NCERT, sample papers and previous year questions.

How CBSE marks Class 12 answers
Before choosing notes, it helps to know how marks are given.
- Keywords matter. Marking schemes list the terms and points examiners look for. Answers in NCERT language tend to score well.
- Steps earn marks. In numericals and derivations, marks are given for formulas, steps and the final answer separately.
- Diagrams and graphs add value. A labelled diagram can earn marks on its own and makes an answer clearer.
- Structure helps examiners. Points, headings and underlined key terms make it easier for an examiner to find what they are looking for.
Most subjects have 80 marks for theory and 20 for internal assessment. Physics, Chemistry and Biology have 70 marks for theory and 30 for practicals. Always check the latest CBSE syllabus and sample paper for your year.
What good Class 12 notes must include
NCERT coverage and NCERT language
The notes should cover every chapter in the current syllabus and stay close to NCERT wording. Rewriting everything in simpler language can make reading easier, but it can also lose the keywords examiners look for.
Answer formats, not just content
Good board notes show how to write an answer: the structure of a 3-mark answer, how to present a 5-mark long answer, how to set out a numerical, how to write a case-based response.
Every derivation and important diagram
In Physics, every derivation in the syllabus should be there, set out step by step. In Biology, Geography and Economics, the diagrams most often asked should be drawn clearly and labelled.
Previous year questions by chapter
PYQs next to each topic show which questions repeat and how they are framed. CBSE often repeats concepts and sometimes repeats questions closely.
A recap for each chapter
A short summary at the end of each chapter is ideal for the last revision before each paper.
For boards, the question to ask about any notes is simple: if I wrote my answer from these notes, would it match the marking scheme?
Science stream notes
Physics
- Every derivation, with a labelled diagram and clear steps.
- Formula sheets per chapter with units.
- Solved numericals showing how to present steps.
- Ray diagrams for optical instruments and circuit diagrams for current electricity.
Chemistry
- Named reactions with mechanisms where required, and conversions.
- Physical Chemistry numericals with clear steps and units.
- Inorganic facts and trends in NCERT language.
- Reasoning questions, such as "explain why", answered in the expected format.
Biology
- Diagrams for reproduction, genetics and biotechnology.
- Flowcharts for processes such as transcription and the stages of gametogenesis.
- Definitions in NCERT wording.
- Differences between related terms, often asked as tables.
Maths
- Standard formulas and results per chapter.
- Worked examples showing full presentation, since steps earn marks.
- Common errors to avoid in calculus and probability.
Commerce stream notes
Accountancy
- Formats for journal entries, ledgers, and the different partnership accounts.
- Step-by-step adjustments for admission, retirement and dissolution.
- Financial statement analysis with ratio formulas.
- Common mistakes in formats, which cost many students marks.
Business Studies
- Principles and functions written as structured points with headings.
- Keywords for each concept, since Business Studies answers are marked heavily on terminology.
- Case study practice showing how to identify the concept in a passage.
Economics
- Diagrams with every axis and curve labelled.
- Definitions and formulas for macroeconomics.
- Short notes on Indian economic development topics.
Arts stream notes
History
- Themes summarised with key dates, people and sources.

Red flags to watch for
- Notes written for entrance exams only. They may be excellent for concepts but light on answer writing.
- No answer formats. Board notes without formats or presentation guidance miss half the job.
- Old syllabus. Chapters removed from the CBSE syllabus should not be there.
- Missing derivations or diagrams. Check the list against the current syllabus.
- No sample. Always see real pages before buying.
How to check a set before buying
- Pick one chapter per subject you have already studied.
- Compare with NCERT. Check that the key definitions, diagrams and derivations are there.
- Look at the answer formats. Would an answer written from these notes match the CBSE marking scheme?
- Check the PYQs. Do they cover recent years and sit next to the right topics?
- Try writing one answer from the notes, then compare it with a marking scheme answer.
How to use notes for boards
From the start of Class 12
Study each chapter from NCERT in school. After each chapter, read the same chapter in your notes and attempt the PYQs.
In the pre-board period
Revise from your notes. Practise writing answers, not just reading. Attempt at least one sample paper per subject under timed conditions.
In the final month
Use the chapter recaps and your error list. Practise diagrams, derivations and formats daily. Solve the official CBSE sample paper and previous year papers.
Between papers
Revise only from recaps, formula sheets and diagrams. Do not start new material.
Boards and entrance exams together
Many Science students prepare for NEET or JEE alongside boards, and many Commerce and Arts students prepare for CUET. Entrance notes cover concepts well, but board answers need writing practice. A common approach is to use entrance notes for concepts and add board-specific practice from sample papers and stream notes in the three months before boards.

Frequently asked questions
Are NCERT textbooks enough for Class 12 boards?
NCERT covers the content. Add sample papers and previous year questions for practice, and use notes for faster revision.
Should I use separate notes for boards and NEET or JEE?
Not necessarily. Entrance notes cover concepts. Add answer-writing practice for boards, or use stream notes that include board formats.
Do handwritten notes help in board exams?
They help with revision because they are condensed and easy to scan. Make sure they keep NCERT language and include answer formats.
When should I start revising from notes?
Ideally after each chapter in school. At the latest, start three months before boards.
The short version
Board notes should stay close to NCERT language, include answer formats, every derivation and key diagram, and PYQs next to each topic. Check a sample against NCERT and the marking scheme before buying. Revise from notes, practise writing answers, and use sample papers and PYQs in the final months.
