Why rereading fails

Rereading feels productive because the page looks familiar, but familiarity is not the same as recall. In the exam you need to produce the answer yourself.

Active recall

After reading a topic, close the notes and write or say everything you remember. Then check. Questions, PYQs and self-check sections are forms of active recall.

Spaced repetition

Revisit material at increasing gaps: after one day, three days, a week and three weeks. Each revision is shorter because you remember more.

A simple schedule

  • Day 1: learn the chapter and test yourself.
  • Day 3: recap and self-check questions.
  • Day 7: PYQs.
  • Day 21: mixed test.

Revise this faster: Biology Detailed Notes — handwritten, colour-coded notes with points often asked, PYQs and tricks in every chapter.

Using notes and PYQs

Use chapter recaps and must-remember lines for quick recall, and PYQs to test yourself in exam format.

The short version

Test yourself instead of rereading, and revisit topics at increasing intervals. Recaps, self-checks and PYQs make both easy.
